Is the load rigged correctly before it leaves the ground?
Rigging mistakes can turn a routine lift into a serious struck-by, caught-between, or dropped load incident. Pipes, steel, forms, equipment, pallets, panels, and bundles can shift, swing, or fall when the rigging is rushed or poorly matched to the load.
Before any lift today, inspect the load and the rigging. Check the weight, balance point, lift points, edges, center of gravity, travel path, and landing area. Use slings, shackles, hooks, chains, and hardware rated for the load and in good condition. Remove damaged gear from service immediately.
Protect slings from sharp edges, rough surfaces, and pinch points. Make sure the hooks are seated correctly and that the safety latches work. Do not wrap chains or slings in a way that could cause them to crush, cut, or slip during the lift.
Keep workers out from under suspended loads and away from the swing path. Use tag lines as needed to control movement, but never wrap one around your hand or body. One qualified person should give clear signals, and the lift should stop if communication becomes unclear.
Before the load rises, take up the slack slowly and check that everything remains balanced. If it tilts, shifts, or looks wrong, lower it and reset. Do not try to fix rigging while the load is suspended.
