Leadership is not only about solving the problems you already understand. Heifetz, Grashow, and Linsky point to the harder work: mobilizing people when the answer is not obvious. In construction, that might mean a schedule recovery, a labor shortage, a safety pattern, a design conflict, or a culture problem that cannot be fixed with a single order.

Surety capacity is becoming a growth gate for commercial contractors. Aon says the global surety market has adequate capacity for strong credits, but underwriting remains disciplined. Baldwin reports surety premium volume has grown more than 40% since 2021, reflecting strong construction demand and more bonded work. The message is simple: capacity is available, but not for sloppy operators.

Contractors should manage bonding as they would working capital. Before pursuing larger public, institutional, or complex private work, update financial statements, backlog reports, cash flow forecasts, job cost history, and key project controls. Sureties will closely examine profitability, debt, liquidity, subcontractor risk, management depth, and the executability of your backlog.

The practical move is to meet your surety before the bid list gets aggressive. Share pursuit plans, explain risk controls, and identify which jobs could strain single project or aggregate limits. Do not let one oversized opportunity crowd out healthier work. Bonding capacity should guide growth, not surprise you after estimating has already been spent.

Can NEVI restarts revive charging infrastructure work?

The federal EV charging buildout is moving again, but the construction market is more selective than before. Revised NEVI guidance, state plan approvals, and reopened funding rounds are pushing projects back toward procurement, especially along highway corridors where utilities, site control, and permits are already close.

Contractors should treat charging as a civil and electrical coordination job. Scopes can include grading, trenching, conduit, pads, switchgear, transformers, utility service, signage, striping, lighting, drainage, bollards, communications, and ADA access. The hidden risks are utility lead times, charger availability, Buy America compliance, and local permitting.

Build a NEVI pursuit map by state, corridor, host site, utility, equipment vendor, award status, and construction readiness. Do not chase every charger location. Prioritize sites with approved plans, clear utility capacity, committed owners, and realistic schedules. Small packages can still protect margin when the execution path is clean.

Will commuting costs kill far-out new home demand?

High fuel prices are changing the math for entry-level new home buyers. John Burns Research and Consulting says owners of newer homes often commute 10% to 15% longer than average homeowners, making them more exposed when gas prices jump. That turns transportation into part of the mortgage decision.

Builders should stop selling locations only based on the base price. Add commute costs, fuel sensitivity, tolls, insurance, and travel time to buyer conversations, especially in outer-ring communities. If daily driving costs erase a lower home price, the value story weakens fast.

This week, audit each community by commute burden. Identify nearby job centers, transit options, schools, grocery access, and work-from-home features buyers actually value. Then adjust marketing, lot releases, and incentives around the total monthly living cost, not just the house payment.

Could engine exhaust poison workers before anyone notices?

Carbon monoxide is dangerous because you cannot see it or smell it. Gas-powered saws, generators, compressors, heaters, pumps, pressure washers, forklifts, and light towers can create toxic exhaust that builds up fast in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas.

Before starting the equipment today, ask where the exhaust will go. Do not run gas-powered tools inside rooms, garages, basements, trenches, tunnels, containers, or near doors, windows, and air intakes unless the area is properly ventilated and monitored.

Keep engines outside whenever possible. Position the exhaust away from workers, openings, fresh-air intakes, and occupied spaces. Use electric or battery-powered equipment when the task is indoors or ventilation is limited.

Watch for warning signs in yourself and others. Headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, confusion, chest tightness, or unusual tiredness can mean carbon monoxide exposure. Do not push through symptoms. Stop the equipment, move to fresh air, warn the crew, and get help.

Ventilation must move exhaust out, not just blow it around. Fans should bring in clean air and remove contaminated air from the space. If monitors are required, make sure they are working before the task begins.
